A shock absorber is a mechanical device designed to smooth out or damp shock impulse, and dissipate kinetic energy. Energy is converted to heat inside the viscous fluid. In hydraulic cylinders, the hydraulic fluid heats up, while in air cylinders, the hot air is usually exhausted to the atmosphere. In other types of dashpots, such as electromagnetic types, the dissipated energy can be stored and used later. In general terms, shock absorbers help cushion vehicles on uneven roads.
Worn shocks can be very dangerous. If your vehicle dips forward when you apply brakes and the vehicle take longer to stop (nose dive) this could be a cause of worn shock absorbers. This also causes poor control over the vehicle (body roll). One could also see their tyres getting worn out quicker (tyre cupping). Your ride becomes quite rough and noisy. When accelerating, the front of the vehicle rises to unusual heights and the rear of the vehicle dips. There are many other symptoms of poor shocks. One should never drive with worn out shocks.
