Description

The Ignition Control Module helps control the electrical current used by the ignition coil. The ignition control module switches transistors on and off based on input from the magnetic pulse generator in the distributor. The magnetic pulse generator transmits an AC voltage signal that corresponds with engine speed and the position of the crankshaft position. The ignition control module converts the analog signal into a digital signal, which essentially is used as an on/off switch by the ignition control module.

 

Defective Symptoms

The first indication of module failure is a stutter at high RPM that feels remarkably like the engine's rev limiter. As the module continues to worsen, the engine's upper-RPM limit will get lower, and the cut will get choppier. Eventually, the condition will manifest itself as high RPM misfire, which can't be mistaken for anything else. Perhaps the most telling symptom of ignition module failure is temperature-related stalling. Temperature failures most often happen when the module has an internal short or one of its relays stick closed. As current flows through the module, its circuits will overload and refuse to function until they're left to cool. Most often, the car will start and run fine, but will stop running anywhere from seconds to minutes later. The engine may not restart immediately but will do if left to cool for about 10 minutes.

Position

  • The ignition control module typically mounts on the engine. Some components in ignition control modules are heat-sensitive, thus modules are often covered in insulating material around the internal circuitry. A heat shield may also be placed between the engine and ignition control module.

 

Operation

Ignition Timing

  • When an engine starts, the ignition system operates via module timing. The engine control module signals the ignition control module, which trips a switch in the ignition control module. Activating this switch enables the primary circuit transistor to operate via signals from the engine control module. The engine control module can then calculate ignition timing based on engine information sensors, such as engine speed and engine load.
